Busy Bees

Tue, 03/09/2010 - 15:32

We've been busy bees lately...packing, moving, and everything else that goes along with purchasing a house.  The safety gate has finally been installed and now this one is free to roam safely.

I have a feeling that this basement door is going to be her favorite place to hang out, but I also know that she will be begging to go outside everyday.

The rocks in the front have been fun for her to play with, though I'm going to have to figure out how to keep her from banging them on the glass storm door without having to get up from my rocking chair of course (we love the rocking chair front porch).

With over an acre, there's definitely enough room for these two to play "tag", explore, or sneak up on deer, which we've seen a lot of already.

Can you say lawn tractor?  It's definitely at the top of the list of items we will be purchasing soon :)

Char Siu Bao (Baked)

I'm so happy to hear that some of you have made some of the recipes I've posted and I'm glad that they worked out for you!  This is probably the last one of the series and I probably wouldn't have even attempted making them except that we don't live close to a Chinatown.  Char siu bao is my absolute favorite and my personal way of measuring a dim sum shop or Chinese bakery.  I actually prefer the steamed ones, but since I have absolutely no idea how to make the dough for steaming (I've tried and failed miserably), I decided to try to make baked ones.

Since we don't live within driving distance to fresh char siu (Chinese barbecued pork) I attempted to make some in the oven using a char siu seasoning package (NOH brand) from the Asian store.  It was OK, but it wasn't the real thing...however, it worked perfectly in this recipe and my char siu bao craving was satisfied :)

Soy Sauce Chicken

This certainly has become a family favorite.  While we were growing up, my mom used to make a variation of this using beef and chinese five spice.  I love it and we have it a lot because it is a tasty dish that cooks itself.  My favorite part has to be the soy sauce eggs, especially after they've been chilled.  If you're feeling daring, it's really good with chinese five spice as well.
